Always use commas

Hello bloggers! This post is about what we did for writing. We worked on using our commas, because commas play an important role in our writing. For example, here is a piece of writing that doesn't have commas, and one that does have commas. Can you see how using commas changes the meaning of a sentence?

The pupil said the teacher should be put in detention for not doing his homework.

And here is the one with commas:

The pupil, said the teacher, should be put in detention for not doing his homework. There will be some more examples at the bottom after the presentation of my work.

Commas to Clarify Meaning

Alter the following so they include commas in the correct places:

1. When the lighting was incredibly bright, people were scared.
2. “Careful children!”, shouted the teacher.
3. As the campers sat round the fire eating, the bear hid in the bushes.
4. “Let’s leave Samira!”, he shouted through the darkness.

Add in the commas to change the meaning of these sentence then explain how the meaning has changed:

Original Sentence	Altered Sentence	How has the meaning changed?
The pupil said the teacher was to be put in detention for not doing his homework.	The pupil, said the teacher, was to be put in detention for not doing his homework.	I put a comma after the word “said”.
Help a burglar.	“Help!”, a burglar.	I changed it so that it didn’t tell you to say help a burglar.

Use commas to give the two sentences different meanings:

As the sun shone bright red, people moved into the shade.

As the sun shone bright red people moved into the shade.

The room was full of crying babies, and mothers.

The room was full of crying babies and mothers.

The boy said, the teacher was noisy.

The boy said the teacher was noisy.

Challenge:

Write an appropriate sentence to describe the pictures, with commas to clarify meaning where needed.

“Shh”, said the angry teacher.	“Do your work”, said the teacher.

More examples of how commas are important and why you should use more than one:

• I love cooking my pets friends and family

          I love cooking, my pets, friends, and family.

• Lets eat Grandpa!

          Lets eat, Grandpa!

• While dad was eating the Dog, the cat and the horse were trying to steal his meal. 

          While dad was eating, the dog, the cat and the horse were trying to steal his meal.

Terrific Tuesdays

Hello Blogging world! Today I am going to show you my detective work. On Tuesdays the year sevens eights go to a different school to do other things with technology, they also build things like radios, so the year fives and sixes (that includes me.) work on these topics that our teachers give us. Last term our topic was superheros, so we made our own superheros out of clay, just like Alberto Giacometti did with his sculptures! Except, he made his out of a different materiel.

 Anyway, our new topic is about detectives and how to be a spy. Below you will see a few pictures on what I have been working on this week, including fingerprint art, and a website that teaches you about forensics!

What would it be like if we were all the same (Positives and Negatives)?

Hello blogging world! Today I am going to tell you the positives and negatives of being the same. And I am going to present this all in a biteable. I have just recently learned about them in student summit, and have decided to create a blog post with it. I hope that you like it! Please give me some more feedback (If you would like) If you have more positives and negatives and/or would like to comment on something else.

My Magnificent Math work

Today we have been working on something for maths called the toothpick challenge. It is when we have to put toothpicks in a square and see how many toothpicks we have to use. If you don't understand you will see what I mean here.

Student Summit

Just today we went to student summit at South Hornby school. It was pretty cool and I had a lot of fun. Here is a video that I made on biteable (Biteable is one of the many things that I learned at Student Summit).

Colourless

(DO NOT WORRY. THIS STORY IS NOT REAL.)

My Poem:

I wake up in the morning, The world is black and white,

the trees and the grass, it gives me a fright,

walking around thinking what to do,

I decide to call friends, and think this through,

I quickly have breakfast and wonder around,

 to check if anything else is upside down,

surely enough there's nothing to be scared about,

just thinking and thinking, about the colors where-abouts.

Imagine waking up to a world that is black and white, what colors would you miss? Here are the colors that I would probably miss and why I would miss them.

I would miss all of the colors.

Why?:

• Because the green color of the trees really suit them.
• If everything was black and white and grey, the sky would be a boring old grey color.
• It would be boring (Well, not if I never even knew colors exist, which I do).
• Rainbows would just be a dull grey and black color, instead of it's many colors.

I have asked a family member and here is her response: 

Green, Blue and Brown.

Why?:

She has chosen all of those colors because they are all earthly colors, like green, which is the color of trees, plants, grass and many many more. Blue because it is (Sort of) the color of the sky, and most people would describe the ocean as blue. Also brown because it is the color of the earth (Soil/Dirt/Mud). Brown also because it is the color of her skin, and she can't imagine having paper white skin.

What would YOU choose?

What Materials?

What three materials would you chose if you were one of the three little pigs? Well, today I am going to ask myself that question and answer it on this blog.

Materials:

• Metal

• Steel

• Limestone

Why? I picked Metal because It is a strong sturdy material, and the wolf definitely won't be able to blow it down. I picked Steel because same as Metal, Steel is a strong material and would be able to hold of a few blows. Last but not least, Limestone Because it is very strong, I have done some research and this is what I got:

Limestone is a type of rock that is basically made up of bits of animal shells, And for over thousands of years they keep collecting on the seafloor. And when these things are burnt, they result in Lime Stone. Please correct me in the comments below if I have gotten something wrong, or would like to add on some information.
